Day 41 - Entering Croatia

Tuesday 5th August 2014

It's another's fine evening at Kamp Koren, red wine and pizza, camping high up above the main camp in Zone E.

When we arrived we were almost alone in the camping field. After dinner we walked back up to find the place crowded. A tour bus from Czech Republic had somehow navigated the narrow and very steep track and disgorged a large crowd of rather noisy neighbours. We turned in as the sun set wishing they would all just shut up.

Entering Croatia
Our prayers were answered soon after. There is the biggest thunderstorm the world has ever seen, crashing and rolling around the mountains directly overhead. It goes on for hours. That shuts the buggers up, and next morning their cheap single-skin tents are awash, all their sleeping bags sodden.
We feel quite smug as we pack up our (entirely dry) gear and head down to the main camp for breakfast.

Earlier this morning we met Martin, an Austrian working for BMW Motorrad as a tour guide. He very kindly mapped out a route for us taking us over into Croatia via a small pass and border checkpoint that avoids the main tourist routes.

It's a great ride and by mid-afternoon we are cruising down the east side of the Istrian peninsula on the Croatian Riviera. We travel through the busy town of Opatija to the adjacent village of Icici.

Tomtom comes up with a small campsite just above the coast road. It's rather overgrown but we find a quiet spot and set up camp. There's a neat restaurant for more of the ibiquitous beer and pizza. £1.60 for a pint and £3.50 for a pizza. Mick is loving Croatia already.

Tomorrow we are going to circumnavigate the peninsula sticking to the coast roads wherever we can, and look for a couple of days swimming and relaxing off the bikes.
